The Department of Nursing has the oldest history among Chonnam National University's various departments. The nursing college started as a nursing training school, which was founded in 1923 with the establishment of Ja-hye hospital. In 1971, the nursing department was licensed as a 4-year school and admitted the first freshmen the very next year. In 2005, the department was promoted to a nursing college, defining it as a leader of nursing in the Honam area.
There are 1,921 college alumni, 316 masters and 71 Ph. D. alumni so far. The college has been selected as a 'nationwide excellent college' in a 1997 evaluation of undergraduate and graduate schools. Also in 2008, KABON (Korean Accreditation Board of Nursing) selected the college as a 'nationwide excellent college'. Graduates are currently playing active roles in diverse fields such as health institutions, central ministries, local governments, or Health Insurance Corporation, etc. as a nurse or professional.
