Department of Korean Language & Literature
The goal of the Department of Korean Language and Literature is to study the history and structure of spoken and written Korean language scientifically and also, to appreciate and criticize classical and modern literature. Spoken language and written language are the most basic methods to express the human mind and a resource to construct mental systems. Therefore, through the study of the nature of language with the usages of Korean language and then the essence of language art, students are enabled to understand the history, modes, and rules of Korean language and literature.
The Department has developed the theory of speech skill, the theory of literature appreciation, the theory of general writing, and the theory of creative writing and has put them to practical use to help students improve their language skill, aesthetic sentiments, and writing skill. That is, general studies and education about Korean language and literature, development of language skill, and culture of aesthetic appreciation are aims of the Department.
We offer three special fields of study: Korean Linguistics, Korean Classical Literature, and Modern Literature. In the field of Koran Linguistics, the Department offers a range of linguistic courses, including semantics, phonology, syntax, and dialectology. The field of Classical Literature includes classical poetry, classical prose, Chinese classics, and oral literature. In the field of Modern Literature, the Department introduces students to poetry, novel, drama, and criticism.
