The Department of Psychology was founded in 1978, and began to offer master's degree program in 1984 and Ph.D. program in 1996.

As the only Department that offers extensive psychology courses in the region of Gwangju and Jeonnam province, excellent education and research programs are offered in various areas of psychology including cognitive, developmental, biological learning, social, clinical, counseling personality, health, and industrial psychology. The Department houses one of the best research facilities among all the social and humanities departments at CNU. The cognitive neuropsychology lab is equipped with a multi-channel EEG (Electroencephalography, brain wave) machine and computer analysis tools for EEG and FMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) data. The psychobiology lab has several animal behavior apparatuses including shuttle box, elevated-plus maze, and freezing test system, and rat brain surgery equipments. Also, there are several rooms for psychological testing, observing human behavior, and other developmental/social /counseling/clinical psychology experiments.

Main areas of work include counseling centers, mental hospitals, social welfare institutions, social survey and research sectors, marketing and personnel management, advertisement, research institutes, and criminal investigation. Career prospects place a high demand on professional counselors and clinical psychologists due to the recent increase in mental health problems.
