Department of Mathematics
Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space, relation, change, and various topics of pattern, form and entity. Moreover, mathematics enables one to explain the essence of nature itself and extrapolate by utilizing the rigorous mathematical logic. Mathematics can be divided into several departments of study including: algebra which is based on operations of numbers, analysis that studies properties of functions, topology which is on the properties of spaces, and applied math concerned with application of mathematical knowledge to other fields. Today, mathematics is used as an essential tool in many fields, including natural science, engineering, medicine, and social sciences such as economics and psychology.
The major in Mathematics was established in 1952 with the foundation of Chonnam National University. The principal goal of the major in Mathematics is to conduct high quality instruction and research in pure and applied mathematics. The Department offers undergraduate and graduate studies leading to bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees. The research fields of our Department are algebra, analysis, geometry, topology, applied mathematics, and mathematics education. In addition, the Department sponsors various groups of regular seminars for undergraduate students and colloquia for faculty members and graduate students.
Graduates often continue their study of mathematics in graduate school at CNU or other respected universities, both domestic and foreign, and pursue academic careers afterwards. Other students pursue careers as middle and high school teachers, researchers, computer programmers, actuaries, derivative specialists, and information security specialists.
